What is the NDIS?

National Disability Insurance Scheme

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national scheme that revolutionises the way people with disabilities get the supports and services needed to achieve their goals.

How does the NDIS work?

For eligible participants, the NDIS provides funding that is spread across different support categories. This funding amounts and what is funded is related to your disability and helps you achieve your goals.

Here’s a brief overview of the steps you might go through to access NDIS funding:

  1. Determine eligibility – see NDIS eligibility for details.
  2. Complete an Access Request and supply supporting information. “Access Request” is the term used for completing an application to join the NDIS.
  3. Get prepared for your first NDIS Plan meeting. Get your free Leap in! NDIS Plan Meeting Checklist.
  4. Attend your NDIS Plan meeting.
  5. Receive your first NDIS Plan.

The NDIS will work with you to develop a plan which will outline the goals you have and the types of supports that you want and need. Normally plans will run for 1-2 years depending on your needs.

Funding is split into three categories. Some funding can be used flexibly and without a quote while other funding requires a quote and must be spent on the specific item outlined in your NDIS Plan.

Once you receive an NDIS plan your funding will be split into 3 categories either:

Self-Managed:  Self-management is when you manage your NDIS funding. It gives you the flexibility and choice to decide what supports you buy to meet your plan goals.

Plan Managed:  Plan management is when a provider supports you to manage funding in your NDIS plan. This reduces a lot of the paperwork you would have to do if you were self-managed.

Agency Managed: the NDIS manages your plan and you may utilize this funding with registered NDIS service providers only.

Jade Community Care at this point can only support Self-Managed and Plan-Managed participants.

NDIS Funding Categories

NDIS separates funding into support categories that can be used for various services. These are primarily broken down into the following categories:

Core Supports:  Supports to help you with everyday activities. These support categories are the following:

  1. Assistance with Daily Life
  2. Transport
  3. Consumables
  4. Assistance with Social & Community Participation

Some of these activities include accessing the community, NDIS household tasks (mealtime preparation, laundry, vacuuming etc.), support work, NDIS cleaning services and gardening maintenance. Jade Community Care is able to assist you with your core support needs.

Capacity Building:  Supports to help you maintain or build your skills and independence.

  1. Coordination of Supports
  2. Improved Living Arrangements
  3. Increased Social and Community Participation
  4. Finding and Keeping a Job
  5. Improved Relationships
  6. Improved Health and Wellbeing
  7. Improved Learning
  8. Improved Life Choices
  9. Improved Daily Living

Jade can assist you in accessing the support category (increased social and community participation).

Capital supports:  Medium and high-cost supports. This support category provides support for assistive technology and specialist disability accommodation.

Once you’re an NDIS participant, the  NDIS will work with you to create your NDIS plan.

Your NDIS plan sets out your goals and the supports that may help you pursue those goals and live as independently as possible. We call this the ‘participant’s statement of goals and aspirations’.

We create your plan based on your support needs for the impairments that meet the disability or early intervention requirements.  Your plan will be just for you.

The NDIS normally will fund supports that are directly related to your disability. If your condition impairs your ability to move then the NDIS may fund support workers to assist you with transportation. It is also dependent on the goals of the participant. If one of your goals is to build meaningful relationships they may fund workers to assist with community access.

Funding can either be:

Plan Managed

Self Managed

Agency Managed

The participant during their NDIS plan meeting may request what funding management style they would like.

Once you receive an NDIS plan you as the participant has the choice and control over the supports you want. This also depends on the funding that you receive. Some services that you may want on your team are:

  • Plan Manager
  • Speech Therapist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Support Workers (Core Support Provider)
  • Support Coordinators

Jade Community Care is a core support provider. We can also assist you with general advice regarding how you can utilize your plan

All NDIS participants have the right to access safe and ethical supports and services. The NDIS Code of Conduct helps providers, key personnel and workers respect and uphold those rights by defining expected conduct, behaviour and culture.

Jade Community Care firmly abides by the NDIS Code of Conduct and our own internal Code of Conduct Policy.
